Pushing the boundaries of precision ceramic applications through reliable connections
Special ceramics—such as aluminum oxide, aluminum nitride, and ceramic zrconium oxide—possess exceptional properties, including high electrical insulation, resistance to high temperatures and corrosion, low dielectric loss, and high mechanical strength. Consequently, they have become indispensable core substrate materials in sectors such as semiconductors, vacuum equipment, new energy, laser technology, high-voltage power systems, and medical equipment.
However, ceramics possess an inherent drawback: as inert, non-metallic materials, they cannot be directly welded or brazed, and achieving a high-strength, hermetic bond with metals is extremely difficult. Simple mechanical assembly often leads to gaps or looseness at the ceramic-metal interface; under conditions such as vacuum, high temperature, high pressure, or high frequency, this can result in gas leakage, electrical arcing, or stress-induced cracking—ultimately causing the entire device to fail.
The ceramic metallization process involves applying materials—such as molybdenum-manganese, tungsten, or layers of nickel and gold—to the surfaces of a ceramic component where bonding is required. This creates a dense, highly adherent metallic layer on the ceramic surface, which effectively serves as a "bridge" for the ceramic:
✅ Enables brazed sealing between ceramics and metal components—such as flanges, housings, and electrodes—meeting stringent high-vacuum and hermeticity requirements;
✅ Suitable for high-voltage and high-frequency applications, providing stable electrical conduction while effectively addressing the challenge of routing electrodes through insulating components;
✅ Mitigates thermal stress caused by differences in the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) between ceramics and metals, reducing the risk of cracking during thermal cycling;
✅ Subsequent nickel or gold plating can be applied to enhance oxidation and corrosion resistance, making it suitable for precision assembly in applications such as packaging, sensors, and RF devices.
Many customer assume that ceramics are hard, so they can be assembled directly; however, they overlook the fact that ceramics and metals are fundamentally different materials. Without a proper metallization layer, even the highest-quality advanced ceramics remain isolated components, making them difficult to integrate into precision equipment systems.
